Have you heard of ‘loose-lead walking’? It’s a fancy dog training term for something very ordinary. Loose-lead walking is the technical term for ‘walking down the street WITHOUT your dog dragging you over to every tree and mailbox, and pulling after every dog, person, car and bicycle’.
Here at Stylish Hound, we know that walk-walkies are an essential part of the hooman/dog relationship. Our in-house beagle, Bagel, loves walkies so much that we created the No-Pull Harness in his honour!
When it comes to the question of how much exercise a dog will need, there is a long answer and a short answer. The short answer? Dogs, as a collective, will need between half an hour to two hours of daily exercise. If you have a smaller dog, half an hour to one hour per day will suffice. Larger dogs, on the other hand, will want anywhere between one to two hours per day.
What breed of dog do you have? If you have a purebred, this is an easy question to answer. If your dog’s heritage is unknown - maybe your dog was from a shelter or rescue, or originally a stray - you might find that question a little harder. But you probably have a good guess based on your dog’s looks and behaviour.
So, you’ve decided to take the dog on a leisurely afternoon stroll around the neighbourhood—relaxing, right? Not for much longer, because Charlie’s decided to take you on a walk of his own, pulling SO hard on his leash that you're stumbling over the pavement, praying that no one's around to see your awkward little sidewalk dance. The team at Stylish Hound knows precisely what you're going through, so we've put together some tips for anyone wondering how to teach their dog to not pull on their leash.
Taking your dog on daily walks should be just that, you take your dog on a walk and not the other way around. Having a dog that constantly drags you around by pulling on its leash can make daily walks unpleasant and at times, feel more like a water-skiing activity. However, with the right tools, consistency and treats up your sleeve, you can correct this behavior, and who knows, daily walks with your furry bestie may suddenly become the highlight of your day.
Just imagine setting out on a relaxing walk in the park with your canine chum and before you know it Fido is taking you for a walk! Jeez, no one wants to play an endless game of tug of war when they’re simply trying to take their fur pal for a walk.
